The year is 1742 and the Swedish Empire is in its deepest crisis since the death of Charles XII in 1718. After the stormy shift of power at the Riksdag of 1738—1739, the aggressive and French-backed Hate Party took power. They ruthlessly maneuvered away the peace-seekingMouse Party and its leaders, including Privy CouncillorTure Gabriel Bielke, who in the investigating Gyllenstierna process was convicted, stripped of his state pension, and exiled to his estates, accused of going Russia's affairs.

Intoxicated by their new power, the Hattarna started a war of aggression against Russia in 1741 to reclaim the lands lost in the Peace of Nystad. The war has ended in a catastrophic setback. The Swedish army has been forced into surrender, all of Finland is occupied by the Russians, and in Stockholm discontent boils against the misrule of the Hats.

As if the military fiasco weren't enough, the succession issue has become an acute problem. King Frederick I is old and has only free children. The Hats and Hats are now fighting on the knife in the wings over who will inherit the Swedish crown. At Christmas 1742, circumstances have brought the heads of both hats and caps to Salsta Castle. The Christmas tree is decorated in the King's Hall with candles and saffron bread. But what was supposed to be a Solomonic Christmas celebration ends in a brutal murder. It is now your task to point out the culprit!
